Running 1600 meters in just 6 minutes—and that too barefoot!–Kavita Mahto

Twenty-seven-year-old Kavita Mahato, a resident of Soso village in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district, lost her husband, Deepak Mahato, three years ago. Working as a laborer at a brick kiln, Kavita single-handedly supports her two children and elderly parents-in-law. Even amid such intense struggle, she has scripted history by exemplifying the strength and capability of rural women.

During the trial run for the Home Guard recruitment drive held at Ramgarh’s Sido-Khu Ground, Kavita participated barefoot while wearing a saree. While the set time limit for women to cover 1600 meters was 10 minutes, Kavita completed it in roughly 6 minutes.

At the global track and field level, the official world record in the women's category for 1609 meters (1 mile) is held by Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon.

Set on July 21, 2023, at the Monaco Diamond League:

World record time: 4 minutes 07.64 seconds.

Now imagine—Faith Kipyegon achieved this record backed by world-class professional training, synthetic tracks, high-performance shoes, and optimal nutrition...

Nonetheless, the final race for the Jharkhand Home Guard recruitment exam is still ahead. But looking at Kavita’s determination, the destination certainly doesn't seem far out of reach.
